Keeping Kids Healthy Going Back to School

Back to school is such a fun and exciting time of year for both parents and students. New teachers, new friends and new things to learn! All the excitement that comes from change in environment, routine, and daily activity can lead to undue stress and decreased immune and nervous system function when not managed properly.

Going back to school also means being in a classroom with a lot of kids and being exposed to more germs. Doctors agree that germ exposure is actually necessary to develop a healthy immune system, so it’s not necessary to bathe your child in hand sanitizer.
We are here to provide you with a few tips to keep your kids healthy going back to school!

Schedule and Establish a Routine

Going back to school means changing from a summer routine, that, for a lot of families, can be more lax and unstructured. Change can be stressful for children, so be sure to inform them a few weeks ahead of time what to expect for their back to school rhythm and routine. Be sure that they know what times they will be expected to do after-school activities, homework, and start getting ready for bed, etc. The more you communicate with your child about what they can expect from their day, the less stress they will have, and you in turn, will have more cooperation from your child.

Well Balanced Nutrition and Supplementation

Great nutrition is always important for proper growth and development in children. Eating minimal amounts of processed foods will help to reduce stress on growing bodies. Be sure your child eat lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits and drinks a lot of water. Also, when possible, protein from animals that are grass-fed and free-range is best. When purchasing fish, avoid farm-raised and opt for wild caught.

Supplementing with Vitamin C and Zinc during weather changes is important if you’re not able to fit in as many vegetables and fruit. Adding a pre and pro-biotic supplement to your child’s regimen can help to support immune function since much of the immune system lies within the gut.

Be sure to ask your chiropractor about whole food vitamins and supplements that they suggest.

Regular Chiropractic Care for Kids

Chiropractic is focused on the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves that branch out between the bones in the back extending to every cell, tissue, and organ in the bKids Chiropractors in Virginia Beach | Kid Getting Chiropractic Adjustmentody. When the vertebrae, or bones in the spine, misalign, it places undue stress on the nerves and they aren’t able to function correctly as a result. This is called subluxation.

Only 10% of the nervous system interprets pain, so kids can have subluxations and not even know it.
Chiropractors remove this interference known as subluxation by gently shifting the spine from the bad position to the good position. As a result, proper nervous system communication is restored and the body functions at a more optimal level.

Chiropractic care is known to boost the immune system by coordinating function in the body, therefore, creating strength in the body to resist stress. Children who regularly see a chiropractor are sick less often and have better attendance at school and school-related activities.
